Space Mining

TBA’s space planning work is comprehensive. It includes existing space analysis, programming and space planning for reorganization, physical and financial planning, and feasibility analysis for both public and private sector clients. We understand that Space Mining requires the architectural re-interpretation of existing space to meet our clients' new or changing space and organizational requirements.

Our knowledge of this process is expertly demonstrated by our successful development of space layout recommendations and designs implemented by many municipal and private sector clients as a means to reorganizing to optimize existing space.

TBA has worked extensively with the Bedford, Nantucket, and Brookline Public School Systems, as well as the City of Newton and privately owned North Bennet Street School in Boston to develop and implement conceptual layouts and plans for building improvements specifically designed to reconfigure existing space for optimal space use. Work includes analysis of site and structures as well as demographic analysis of population, grade configuration and educational philosophy. Findings include concept plans and layouts for reconfigured schools including cost estimates, and implementation plans.

The City of Newton required extensive Space Mining work for reconfiguration of its historic City Hall. Services included existing space analysis, programming, and space planning for the reorganization of its historic 80,000 sf City Hall building. The project involved coordination with over 15 City administrative departments scattered throughout the building and in other buildings. TBA developed several scenarios to create synergies within and between departments and establishing a new interdepartmental customer services function. Work included reconfiguring space for the Election Commission, City Clerk, Planning and Engineering and Public Works Departments. Partial implementation of plans included complete architecture and engineering services for construction of offices for several departments.
